If you are a business owner, you are obliged to provide your staff with a safe working environment.  This does not only mean that you make sure the floors are repaired and that all of the equipment works correctly, but also that they have what they need to ensure that they don’t get hurt when they are working.  For jobs that require a lot of lifting, a standard tool for all staff members should be back support belts.

You can provide them with all of the videos that you want and bark at them all you want.  The truth of the matter is that they are going to be faced with a situation at some point that they pick something up the wrong way by accident and the next thing you know, their back is out and they are out of work for a week or more.

People just don’t seem to understand how easy it is to mess up your back.  You can be the strongest guy in the world and when you grab something the wrong way, POP!  Now you are not only out of work, but when you come back you will be more and more tentative to ever do any kind of lifting because you don’t want to get hurt again.

As the business owner, you are not getting any production out of them and it is costing you a ton of money.  Whether you have to pay another staff member to come in to take the stop of the person when they are out, or you have to hire someone else, it is a lot of money going down the tubes.

The figure to cost the average employee at a minimum wage job is astronomical.  You have to pay them for their time in HR when they are filling out their paperwork.  You have to then pay them when they are on the floor for the first week or two to get trained.  And you are also getting less than full production out of the member that is training them.

Now look at the financial aspect of all of this.  You lost a staff member who is now getting paid sick time that you have to pay.  You have to train someone else and pay the person that is training them.  Then you have to wait for them to get up to par with the other person that was working the position before them.  Assuming they are a genius and catch on in less than a month, you are looking at well over $3,000 to replace that injured worker.

All of that because you could not supply a back brace that costs about $100 for the worker.  If that doesn’t sink home, nothing will.  Business always comes down to dollars and cents and nothing could be clearer than the reason to supply your staff with back support belts.  You can complain all you want that you can’t afford them, but in reality you cannot afford to not buy them.
